WEDDINGBLUMS is pleased to provide you with the below information to assist you with obtaining a marriage license in the state of Ohio. While these rules may apply to other states as well as Ohio, the rules below are specific to Ohio.

Special Note: State and County marriage license requirements change frequently. The information provided here is for guidance only and should not be regarded as legal advice. ALWAYS contact your local county clerk or marriage license office BEFORE making any set plans. Your wedding day is one of the most important days in your life and it is very important to make sure you get all of the legal items straight.

In order to get married, you need to apply for, and receive, a marriage license. This is the legal document that allows you to get officially married under the law. No waiting period or blood test is required to obtain a marriage license in Ohio. It generally only takes about 10 to 15 minutes to complete the paperwork. The current license fee is $40.00 and most counties require cash. Although, some counties may allow you to pay with a money order if you so choose. Witnesses are NOT required in the State of Ohio.

You will need to apply for the license together. Make sure to bring proof of age and identification. This proof needs to be an official state issued driver’s license or ID card, a visa, or a passport. You will also need to know your Social Security number, so it is handy to just bring the card with you. You do not want to apply for your marriage license too early. The license will expire after 60 days.

After obtaining your marriage license, you still are not married. You need to have a justice of the peace or a member of the clergy sign the document. They usually will ask you for the license just before the ceremony, and then sign it. After the ceremony, they will send it in to the proper government agency to be validated. Also, you will be asked when applying for the license the name of the person you expect to perform the ceremony.

If you were previously married, you will also want to bring an official copy of the divorce decree, or an official copy of a deceased spouse’s death certificate.

The license itself must be obtained from the county of residence of either the bride or the groom. You may also obtain it from the county in which you are performing the ceremony. While you do not have to be a resident of Ohio, if you are not a resident, the license must be from the county where the ceremony is being held.

Weddingblums has compiled a list of phone numbers for each of the county clerk's offices in Ohio. The county clerk's office for WEDDINGBLUMS is Delaware County Probate Court and they can be reached at (740) 368-1880.

The age requirements in Ohio are fairly specific. If you are 18 to 21 years of age, you will need to show your birth certificate. Consent from a parent or guardian is required for persons aged 16-17, and you may have to contact the Probate Court for further approval. Additionally, the Judge may require the minors to state that they have received marriage counseling that the court feels is satisfactory. Section 3101.05 speaks about how the court will deal with a pregnant minor.

At the present time, Ohio does not recognize Same Sex Marriage. However, WEDDINGBLUMS would be honored to perform a same sex commitment ceremony for you in our Chapels.
